The Humane Society of Charlotte was founded in 1970 and has been providing low-cost, free veterinary care to the community for many decades. In the 1990s, the shelter was home to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Animal Care and Control division. The old building contained a large, cinderblock-lined atrium without windows and little natural light. After a pet adoption boom, the Humane Society of Charlotte moved into a former police station. The shelter was overcrowded and had vermin. This building was designed to contain. The Humane Society of Charlotte will call the new location home. They will be offering pet adoption and veterinary treatment to more than 35,000 animals per year. The new location will allow for three times more cats to be housed and there will be an outdoor cat "cat-cave".
